Evergreen Eye Center surgeons join Operation Sight’s quest to end cataract blindness.
Cataracts are the age-related clouding of the eye’s naturally clear lens, causing progressive vision impairment, reduced capability and quality of life, and ultimately total vision loss. A normal process of aging, cataracts affect about 24 million Americans, or roughly 17 percent of the population over age 40, according to the National Eye Institute (National Institutes of Health).
Making cataract surgery free to people in need.
Because they are age-related, cataracts affect people’s eyesight without regard for ethnicity, geography, demographics, income level or insurance coverage. With surgery as the only treatment, many individuals with cataracts are unable to afford or access the care they need.
That’s why Evergreen Eye Center is pleased and proud that its surgeons are active participants in Operation Sight. Operation Sight is the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery’s charitable program in which eye surgeons perform cataract surgery at no cost to these needy patients.
“We’re very excited to be able to help people in this way,“ said Evergreen Eye Center’s Dr. Robert A. Tester. “Participating as volunteer cataract surgeons in Operation Sight allows us to bring state-of-the-art, highly skilled cataract surgery — and improved vision and quality of life — to more people. This is our purpose as eye physicians,” Tester added, “and it certainly includes people for whom access or payment is out of reach.”
